The Role: Interim Assistant Director – Children's Social Care
About You:
As Interim Assistant Director of Children’s Social Care, you will provide strategic leadership, operational oversight, and expert guidance to deliver high-quality, safe, and effective services for children, young people, and their families.
You will play a key role in driving improvement, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the local authority in delivering its statutory responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage Children’s Social Care services, including safeguarding, looked-after children, fostering and adoption, and early help.
Drive strategic transformation and service improvement, ensuring best outcomes for children and young people.
Work collaboratively with internal and external partners including schools, health services, police, and voluntary sector organizations.
Ensure services operate in line with national legislation, statutory guidance, and Ofsted frameworks.
Provide leadership and support to Heads of Service and frontline managers to embed a culture of performance, accountability, and continuous learning.
Manage and monitor budgets effectively, ensuring resources are deployed efficiently and outcomes are maximized.
Lead on preparation for inspections and respond proactively to regulatory feedback.
Act as a key member of the Children’s Services leadership team and deputise for the Director when required.
Essential Skills & Experience:
Proven senior leadership experience within children’s social care at Head of Service or Assistant Director level.
In-depth understanding of relevant legislation (Children Act 1989/2004, Working Together 2023, etc.).
Strong track record in managing safeguarding, looked-after children, and early intervention services.
Experience of delivering change and improvement in complex environments.
Ability to lead through challenge and crisis, with resilience and a child-focused approach.
Experience of working with elected members, partner agencies, and multi-disciplinary teams.
Recognised social work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
What's On Offer: Start ASAP. A rate of between £700 – £800 per day for an initial 6 months. Hybrid working – 3 days onsite, 2 days remote working.
