The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Practitioner (Team/Case Manager) to join a well-established residential family assessment service in Coventry.
This role sits within the Senior Management Team and plays a key part in delivering high-quality, independent family assessments within a residential setting. You will lead on complex parenting and risk assessments, supervise staff, and contribute to safe, structured, and reflective practice in line with national safeguarding frameworks.
Working within a multi-disciplinary environment, you will ensure families receive consistent, transparent, and professional support throughout their assessment journey, while maintaining a strong focus on safeguarding and child welfare.
This is a practice and leadership-focused role with responsibility for assessment quality, safeguarding oversight, staff supervision, court engagement, and contributing to service improvement.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Providing leadership as part of the Senior Management Team within a residential family assessment service
- Ensuring the safety and welfare of children is always prioritised
- Undertaking comprehensive parenting and risk assessments within a residential setting
- Delivering structured baseline (2–4 week) assessments and full analytical reports
- Developing, implementing, and evaluating intervention and work programmes with families
- Producing high-quality court reports and making clear, evidence-based recommendations
- Representing the service in court proceedings and providing written and verbal evidence
- Working closely with social workers and multi-agency professionals to support safeguarding outcomes
- Monitoring and evaluating parenting capacity, child development, and family functioning
- Supervising and managing up to three families at any one time
- Supporting pre-placement planning, interventions, and structured feedback sessions with parents/carers
- Ensuring compliance with Working Together to Safeguard Children (2026) and safeguarding procedures
- Contributing to policy, procedure, and service development alongside senior leaders
- Managing residential placement arrangements including health, safety, staffing, and resources
- Leading and supporting a team of Family Assessment Workers
- Providing supervision, performance management, and on-call support on a rota basis
- Promoting reflective practice, learning, and continuous improvement within the team
- Ensuring timely completion of reports and effective workload prioritisation
- Maintaining high standards of recording, documentation, and professional accountability
About You
You will be an experienced practitioner with a strong background in safeguarding, child protection, and family assessment work, ideally within residential or court-directed settings.
You will also have:
- A recognised social work qualification (BA Social Work, DipSW, CQSW, CSS) or equivalent
- Registration with Social Work England (or relevant professional body where applicable)
- At least 2 years post-qualification experience
- Experience working with vulnerable children, young people, and families
- Experience completing comprehensive parenting and risk assessments
- Experience presenting evidence in court settings
- Experience supervising or managing staff (desirable)
- Strong knowledge of child development and safeguarding practice
- Understanding of key legislation including Children Act 1989, 2004, and Public Law Outline 2014
- Knowledge of Working Together guidance and the Framework for Assessment of Children in Need and their Families
- Strong report writing and analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to manage complex, high-pressure situations and make sound professional judgments
- Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload effectively
- Ability to build effective professional relationships with families and partner agencies
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, and reflective practice
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Flexibility to participate in on-call rota and work across Coventry and Birmingham sites
